Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Gallstones and cholecystitis

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy removes the gallbladder through 3 or 4 small incisions using a camera and specialised instruments. It is considered for stones in the gallbladder or a bile duct and for certain gallbladder diseases, depending on the medical assessment.

Go to the emergency room if you have:

  • Severe, persistent pain
  • Fever
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Vomiting that prevents you from keeping fluids down

General guidance. It does not replace a medical assessment.

Careful listening, a review of your tests and non-surgical options when they apply.

Frequently asked questions

Does a first consultation mean I will need surgery?

No. The first consultation establishes a working diagnosis and reviews your tests, alternatives, benefits and risks. Surgery is only proposed when it is indicated.

What is the difference between open and laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopy uses small incisions and a camera, and can improve recovery and comfort in selected patients. Open surgery is an option for complex disease or when a patient cannot tolerate laparoscopy; recovery is slower, but it is highly effective.

How much does surgery cost in Mexicali?

The quote depends on the diagnosis, hospital, anaesthesia, supplies, equipment, complexity and insurance coverage. You receive an individual quote after your case has been assessed.

How long does recovery from surgery take?

It varies with the operation, other illnesses, what is found during surgery and your usual activities. After laparoscopic surgery many patients return to work in a couple of weeks; more complex disease or open surgery can take longer.

What tests should I bring to the consultation?

If you have them, bring ultrasounds, CT scans, endoscopies, previous lab results, prescriptions and a list of your medicines. There is no need to order new tests on your own.
