Consultations, cost and insurance

Does a first consultation mean I will need surgery?

No. The first consultation establishes a working diagnosis and reviews your tests, alternatives, benefits and risks. Surgery is only proposed when it is indicated.

What is the difference between open and laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopy uses small incisions and a camera, and can improve recovery and comfort in selected patients. Open surgery is an option for complex disease or when a patient cannot tolerate laparoscopy; recovery is slower, but it is highly effective.

How much does surgery cost in Mexicali?

The quote depends on the diagnosis, hospital, anaesthesia, supplies, equipment, complexity and insurance coverage. You receive an individual quote after your case has been assessed.

How long does recovery from surgery take?

It varies with the operation, other illnesses, what is found during surgery and your usual activities. After laparoscopic surgery many patients return to work in a couple of weeks; more complex disease or open surgery can take longer.

What tests should I bring to the consultation?

If you have them, bring ultrasounds, CT scans, endoscopies, previous lab results, prescriptions and a list of your medicines. There is no need to order new tests on your own.

Does Dr. Blancarte treat abdominal emergencies?

Yes, he is available around the clock for abdominal emergencies. Call or message on WhatsApp and go as soon as possible to the emergency department you are directed to.

Do you accept health insurance?

Yes. Care through your insurer or by reimbursement depends on your policy, the provider network, the hospital and authorisations; patients from abroad are also seen.

Can I book an appointment on WhatsApp?

Yes, you can message +52 686 257 2298 to request an appointment and administrative information. Messages do not replace a medical assessment.

What a general surgeon does

What does a general surgeon do?

A general surgeon diagnoses and surgically treats diseases of the abdomen and abdominal wall, such as gallstones, hernias, appendicitis and reflux, as well as superficial lesions. They also decide when an operation is not needed.

When should I see a general surgeon?

When you have persistent or recurring abdominal pain, a bulge in the groin, navel or a scar, discomfort after fatty meals, reflux that does not improve with treatment, or a growing lump under the skin. For severe pain, fever or persistent vomiting, go to the emergency room.

What is minimally invasive surgery?

It is surgery done through small incisions with a camera and specialised instruments, such as laparoscopy. In selected patients it can mean a quicker recovery and an earlier return to normal activities.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

How many incisions does laparoscopic gallbladder surgery need?

In most patients it is done through 3 or 4 small incisions that admit a camera and specialised instruments. In specific circumstances a different approach may be required.

What tests do I need to have my gallbladder assessed?

An abdominal ultrasound and laboratory tests are usually reviewed, together with each patient's anaesthetic risk. If you already have previous studies, bring them to the consultation.

When should I go to the emergency room for gallbladder pain?

Go to the emergency room if you have severe pain that does not ease, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or vomiting that stops you from keeping fluids down. Do not wait for a scheduled appointment.

Inguinal hernia repair

Is inguinal hernia surgery done with mesh?

Yes, a specialised mesh is usually placed, which markedly lowers the chance of the hernia coming back. The approach, open or laparoscopic, is chosen for each patient.

How long will I stay in hospital for an inguinal hernia?

Most patients go home the same day as the procedure. Return to normal activities usually takes a couple of weeks, depending on each person's tolerance.

When is an inguinal hernia an emergency?

It is urgent if you feel sudden, severe pain, if the bulge no longer goes back in, or if there is vomiting or a swollen abdomen. In that case go to the emergency room immediately.

Umbilical and ventral hernia

Does every umbilical hernia need surgery?

Not always. Selected cases can be watched, while others are best repaired surgically, often with mesh depending on the size of the defect.

What is assessed before repairing a ventral hernia?

The characteristics of the defect, weight, smoking, other illnesses and the risk of recurrence are assessed. The repair is planned with that information.

Laparoscopic appendectomy

How do I know if I have appendicitis?

It usually starts with abdominal pain that moves to the lower right side, with fever, loss of appetite and nausea. Diagnosis is confirmed with an examination, laboratory tests and imaging, so suspected appendicitis needs urgent assessment.

Can I go home the same day after an appendectomy?

Many patients go home the same day thanks to the laparoscopic approach. It depends on how the illness progressed and whether there were complications.

Reflux and hiatal hernia

When is reflux treated with surgery?

Surgery is considered when symptoms persist despite proper treatment and the tests support it. It may include hiatal repair and laparoscopic fundoplication.

What tests are done before reflux surgery?

In selected cases, endoscopy, manometry and objective reflux testing are considered. They confirm the diagnosis and help plan the treatment.

Lipomas, cysts and skin lesions

Does a lipoma have to be removed?

Not always. Some are watched and others are removed, especially if they grow, hurt, become inflamed or get infected. The decision is made at the assessment.

What are the signs of a wound infection?

Fever, spreading redness, pus or increasing pain. If you have any of them, seek medical assessment soon.
